The day had a more relaxed start due to yesterday’s intense training session with a latish breakfast and team meeting at 10:15. First on the agenda was the traditional signing of the host nation's flag by all the touring party, which will eventually be displayed with pride at Norwich School. The rest of the meeting was a more serious affair with subjects like attitude, discipline, commitment, desire and team spirit being discussed ahead of the first tour fixture. Once the meeting concluded the boys were free to relax and enjoy some free time. The odd one or two
decided to take a dip in a very cold pool but didn’t stand it for long, but most headed down to the beach front to take part in a very serious game of score card crazy golf, results to follow. The team departed the hotel at 13:00 for the 45 minute picturesque drive across the north part of Cape Town to the township of Kasselsvlei. All touring teams that travel to South Africa must play a township team and Kasselsvlei are one of the best not losing more than a couple of matches over the last number of years. As the coach approached the school the landscape changed dramatically with the large houses giving way to far smaller more humble dwellings, making the atmosphere a little uncomfortable due to new and before unseen surroundings. Just before arrival a rousing rendition of Jerusalem was belted out by the whole squad lifting the team’s morale. There was an unusual silence as the boys entered the school due to the unfamiliar surroundings but once the hand of welcome had been offered everybody started to relax. The local children were eager to get to know and get involved with Norwich and to the boy’s credit they all played ball.
Match Report by Ian Grisewood
The boys were excited at the prospect of their first game on tour, so in order to calm the nerves we had a very competitive crazy golf challenge in the morning. Disappointingly the title was awarded to Nicky Ferns on count back with Mr Grisewood being relegated to 2nd on the number of hole in ones. Ed Crew just edged out the Musket for 3rd place on the same ruling. The game itself was against Kasselsvlei High School and took place in fabulous conditions. It was a bright start to the match with both sides making their intentions clear by throwing the ball around with gay abandon. Eventually Norwich School’s better possession and field position resulted in the first try of the match for Pieter Clausen out inside on the left. It was a real team effort with everybody playing their part. Then there was a period of stalemate with both sides creating chances but just not managing to finish them off. That is until Clausen charged down a chip, collecting the in one movement and then out pacing the defence to score under the posts with Nicky Ferns converting the try. The first period ended with Norwich leading 12-0. The start of the second period was a different story as Kasselsvlei kicked a penalty and scored an unconverted try within the first 5 minutes, 12-8. With the game evenly poised and both teams making numerous changes, it was another moment of instinctiveness from Claussen that gave Norwich some breathing space as he intercepted a pass and scored under the posts, David Treglown converted, 19-8. Kasselsvlei now completely threw causation to the wide stretching out defence from side to side with everybody being called upon to make important tackles. However, eventually th e pressure told and Norwich conceded another try out wide, unconverted, 19-13. With the match going into added time it could still have gone either way but the boys should real grit and determination and thanks largely to an amazing break from Treglown we worked our was up the right touchline and eventually Treglown earned a well deserved try in the corner to seal Victory, 24-13. We were then royally hosted by the staff at the school, the whole squad left in good spirit having made some new friends and enjoyed a completely different school environment.

The Captain's View
As the bus drew in to the parched grassland of Kasselsvlei, the first XV did not know what to expect. The culture shock subsided and the host team welcomed us with a prayer before the game and some big hits during. In the end we ran out comfortable winners a score line of 24-13. The whole experience has enthused & inspired the team, the new head boy Chris Price says “bring it on”.
